Red Sox blown out in series opener with Toronto

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., Teoscar Hernandez, and Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. each had three hits as part of an 18 hit attack Tuesday night, as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-0 at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida in the opener of a three game series.

Leading 1-0 in the fourth inning, Toronto (23-17) blew it open some by scoring three runs helped by a Marcus Semien RBI single, a Boston error, and an RBI double by Bo Bichette. Gurriel, Jr. and Hernandez added RBI hits, and Randal Grichuk hit his seventh homer of the season in the eighth. Grichuk, Danny Janson, and Semien added two hits a piece. The Red Sox (25-18) were held to five hits, two by Alex Verdugo. Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2) took his second straight loss on the mound allowing five runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Hyun- jin Ryu (4-2) allowed no runs on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings to get the pitching win for the Blue Jays. Game two is Wednesday night at 7:37. Boston sends RHP Garrett Richards (3-2, 3.89 ERA) to the hill to face RHP Ross Stripling (0-2, 5.91 ERA) for Toronto.
