May 22, 2021

BANGOR, ME- The Husson Eagles split a pair of games on Day 2 of the NCAA Division III Softball Regional at O’Keefe Field on the campus of Husson University on Saturday.  Husson had their 21 game win streak snapped in their first game of the day, in a 9-1 mercy rule shortened six inning loss to Central Connecticut State. They would bounce back though in a elimination game in the evening, by bouncing Brandeis University out of the tournament 2-0.

Game #5- Husson played as the visitors against the fourth seeded Warriors from ECSU. Sydney Ames led the game off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was moved along to third on a sacrifice bunt by Whitney Bess. Kenzie Dore drove in Ames with an RBI groundout for a 1-0 Eagles lead. Eastern Connecticut tied when Alyssa Vilchez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second. The Warriors took the lead for good 3-1 on a two-run homerun to left field by Brooke Matyasovsky in the third. They added five more in the fifth on an RBI single by Sarah Remillard, a Husson error that scored a run, an RBI single by Laura Zenk, and a two-run single by Cassie Woods. The game was finished off by the eight run mercy rule when Matyasovsky led off the bottom of the sixth with her second homer of the day to left. The Eagles were held to four hits and Ames (13-2) took the loss in the circle allowing nine runs (five earned) on nine hits with four walks in 5+ innings. Matyasovsky, Woods, and Julia Sangiovanni had two hits each for Eastern Connecticut State (31-3), and Carley Stoker (16-0) allowed one run on four hits in 6.0 innings to stay perfect on the season on the mound.

Game #8- In the second game against Brandeis, Morgan Coleman and Jen Jones hit back to back doubles to begin the second inning to score the only run Husson needed. The Eagles added the only other run in the same inning on a heads up running play by Jones at third base. With one out, Katie Raymond would hit a deep foul pop to the left fielder Bridget Cifuni. Cifuni threw home to prevent Jones from scoring, but then Madelyn Fowler broke for second and the catcher Tara Stiggow threw down allowing Jones to race across home plate. Brandeis had a chance in the bottom half loading the bases with one out, but Jones got out of it with two infield popups. Jones led all batters with two hits in the game, and did the rest in the circle staying unbeaten (14-0) allowing no runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in a complete 7.0 inning effort. Alex Cohen (3-2) would take the loss for Brandeis University allowing two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings. Sydney Goldman kept the Judges in the game by firing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief only allowing one hit with seven strikeouts. Brandeis ends their season with a final record of 14-3.

Husson is now 29-2 and will be back to work on what is scheduled to be the end of the Regional on Sunday. The Eagles are set to face Tufts at 12 p.m. Central Connecticut State is the other one left standing out of the three teams remaining, with Tufts being the only one without a loss (2-0).
