May 23, 2021

The Philadelphia Phillies scored four first inning runs off Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez on Sunday afternoon, taking the finale of a three game series with a 6-2 win at Citizens Bank Park.

Kike Hernandez had two hits for Boston (29-19), but their offense was slowed by Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler to end a four game win streak. Franchy Cordero hit his first homerun as a member of the Red Sox, and Rafael Devers also hit a solo homerun to account for the runs. Rodriguez (5-3) lost his third straight start allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Odubel Herrera had three hits for the Phillies (23-24), and Brad Miller had two hits and a first inning three-run homer. Wheeler (4-2) was impressive in 7.1 innings allowing just one run on three hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts.

Boston has a day off on Monday before resuming play Tuesday night at Fenway Park for the first of a two game set against Atlanta. RHP Garrett Richards (4-2, 3.72 ERA) gets the ball for the Sox, against RHP Charlie Morton (2-2, 4.60) for the Braves. Boston is currently in a tie for first place in the A.L. East with the surging Tampa Bay Rays, while the New York Yankees sit just a half game back.
