DEXTER— Avery Herrick struck out 17, including two in the seventh inning to lead Dexter to a 4-2 win over Central in a high school softball game played Tuesday afternoon.
The game started with Central loading the bases with no outs in the first inning. Herrick was able to get out of the jam on a ground ball that she took care of, and a nice double play turned by third baseman Hannah Dean.
Dexter got on the scoreboard when Cheyenne Beem started the bottom of the second inning by getting hit by a pitch, stole second base, advanced to third base on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch
Beem started things again with one out in the fourth inning when she reached on an error with one out. She stole second base and came home to score on a two out single from Jade Wintle.
The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth inning when they took advantage of two Red Devils errors and got a run scoring double from Peyton Grant. While the offense was putting up runs, Herrick was doing her thing in the circle. She struck out at least two in six of the seven innings. She struck out the side three times, including striking out four in the third inning.
The Red Devils cut the four run lead in half when they put two on the board in the sixth inning. Brooke Lunt and Alexys Curtis got hits to spark the rally. Herrick got the final two batters in the inning, and final five batters of the game to close the door on any comeback chance for Central.
Herrick wasn’t the only one shining in the circle. Kaelyn Parks allowed only four runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk, while striking out 11 in the complete game effort for the visitors.
Parks and Lunt had two hits each for the Red Devils, while Lexi Whitty, Curtis, and Chloe Daigle had one each. Central (11-3) will finish their season at home against Mattanawcook on Wednesday. Wintle had two hits, while Grant and Herrick each had one for the Tigers. Dexter (11-2) will finish the regular season with a game at Foxcroft on Wednesday in a game you can see on Eastern Maine Sports Media at 4:15 PM
