Michaud to return to coaching staff, Guite to depart

June 1, 2021

The University of Maine and men’s ice hockey coach Ben Barr announced Tuesday that Alfie Michaud will return to the team as an assistant coach for the 2021-22 season.

Michaud first came on as a volunteer assistant goaltender coach for the 2016-17 season, before being promoted to the full-time assistant position in 2017. As a goalie for the Black Bears he was named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team in 1998, and led Maine to their second national championship in 1999. During that season he received the award for NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. Ben Guite, who was named as the interim head coach in April after the unexpected passing of Red Gendron, told WABI-TV on Monday that he will not be back as an assistant for the upcoming season. Guite was a player and part of the first national championship team back in 1993 under Shawn Walsh. He went on to play 13 professional seasons, most notably in the NHL with Boston, Colorado, and Nashville. He held the interim position until Barr was hired on May 12.
