Coach K to call it quits after 2021-22 season

June 2, 2021

Duke University head men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will retire at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, the school announced on Wednesday.

Krzyzewski, 74, will finish out his 42nd year at the helm with the Blue Devils this coming season. He is the winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball history, compiling a record at Duke of 1,097-302 (.784 win percentage). He was assistant at Indiana to start his career in 1974 and 1975. From 1975-1980 he was the head coach at Army, before landing at Duke in 1980 where he’s been ever since. Since landing at the school, his teams have won 12 ACC regular season titles, 15 ACC Tournaments, been to 12 Final Fours, and won the national championship five different times (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015). His accolades also include three time Naismith College Coach of the Year, NABC Coach of the Year, Clair Bee Coach of the Year, UPI Coach of the Year, and a five time ACC Coach of the Year. Associate head coach Jon Scheyer, who played for Coach K from 2006-2010, will be Krzyzewskis successor spending this season as the coach in waiting and will take over after that.

“My family and I view today as a celebration,” Krzyzewski said in a statement. “Our time at both West Point and Duke has been beyond amazing and we are thankful and honored to have led two college programs at world-class institutions for more than four decades. That, coupled with 11 unforgettable years as the United States National Team coach, has resulted in a remarkable journey. Certainly, I have been blessed to coach some of the finest young men and greatest players in basketball history as a direct result of these unique opportunities. For us, there is no greater joy than being part of our players’ respective endeavors through basketball, and more importantly, their lives off the court. Our family is eternally grateful to everyone who contributed to our career for the past 46 years. So, to the countless members of our extended family, thank you very much.”
