The Boston Red Sox scored four runs in the eighth inning on Saturday night, and guaranteed themselves a series win with a 7-3 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Gleyber Torres gave New York (31-28) a 2-0 lead with a two-run homerun off Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez in the fourth inning. The Sox took the lead for the first time on the night in the sixth inning. With one out, Alex Verdugo singled and Xander Bogaerts doubled to put runners on second and third. Rafael Devers came through with a two-run single to right to tie it 2-2. Hunter Renfoe then singled, and Marwin Gonzales made it five straight hits with an RBI double to make it 3-2 Boston. Torres tied it back up for the Yankees with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the sixth. In the eighth, Devers led off with a single before Renfroe struck out and Gonzalez popped out. The game winner came when Enrique Hernandez doubled to score Devers. They added on when Christian Vazquez doubled in Hernandez, and Bobby Dalbec hit a two-run homer to center field on a 2-1 pitch to finish the scoring.
Rodriquez got a no decision allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Garrett Whitlock (1-1) earned the win in relief allowing no runs on a hit in 1.2 innings. With the tying run on deck in the ninth, Boston brought in closer Matt Barnes who picked up his 14th save by striking out Kyle Hagashioka to end it. Verdugo, Devers, Renfoe, and Vazquez all had two hits each as the Sox improve to 35-23. Chad Green (0-4) took the loss in relief of starter Jameson Taillon and allowed four runs on four hits in just 2/3 of an inning. Gio Urshela had two hits for New York. Boston goes for the sweep on Sunday night at 7:08 p.m., sending RHP Garrett Richards (4-4, 3.75 ERA) to the mound against RHP Domingo German (4-3, 3.27) for New York.
