June 7, 2021

Christian Arroyo, Alex Verdugo, and Xander Bogaerts each had two hits Monday evening as the Boston Red Sox made it five straight wins with a 5-3 victory over the Miami Marlins at Fenway Park. The game was a makeup of a rain postponement last Sunday.

With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Bogaerts and Rafael Devers both singled to put runners on first and third. Bogaerts would end up scoring on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Sox. Arroyo and Verdugo both doubled to lead off the bottom of the third for a 2-0 advantage. Jorge Alfaro cut it to a run at 2-1 with an RBI single in the fourth. Arroyo supplied the breathing room with the eventual game winner, slapping a two-run single to right in the bottom half of the fourth. Verdugo then made it 5-1, driving in Arroyo with a single. Starling Marte hit a solo homerun to center in the fifth for Miami (25-34), and then in the ninth against Adam Ottavino Isan Diaz doubled to drive in Corey Dickerson. Ottavino though retired Alfaro on a groundout with two runners in scoring position to ice the win.

Arroyo had the two key RBI with the two hits to help Boston improve to 37-23, just 1/2 back of the first place Tampa Bay Rays. Nick Pivetta got a no decision allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Darwinzon Hernandez and Josh Taylor both got a hold, Hirokazu Sawumara (2-0) got the win in relief, and Ottavino picked up his third save. Marte had three hits for Miami, while Diaz and Adam Duvall had two each. Zach Thompson (0-1) took the loss in his MLB debut allowing two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. The Red Sox now welcome in the Houston Astros for a three game series. Houston took three of four from them last week in Texas. Boston sends LHP Martin Perez (4-2, 3.09 ERA) to the bump against LHP Framber Valdez (1-0, 1.64) for Houston in the opener at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday.
