Fighting through two rain delays that lasted a total of 2 hours and 21 minutes on Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox picked up another comeback win their MLB leading 28th of the season and another series win with a 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park.
After Boston had fallen behind on a Salvador Perez solo homerun in the top of the second inning, JD Martinez for the second straight night got the game winner with a three-run homer to center in the third. Martinez had the three big RBI to lead the way, while Xander Bogaerts and Marwin Gonzalez had two hits each. Hunter Renfoe, who has been on fire at the plate over the last month, also had two RBI with a groundout and an eighth inning solo homerun. Martin Perez (6-4) picked up the win on the mound allowing two runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Brandon Workman, Darwinzon Hernandez, and Josh Taylor each earned a hold in the game. Perez had four hits for Kansas City (33-46), and Mike Minor suffered the pitching defeat allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings.
First place Boston with now six straight wins become the first American League team to reach 50 wins (50-31) at now the exact midway point of the season, and also extending the AL East lead to three games over Tampa Bay. The Sox go for the four game sweep Thursday afternoon at 1:10, sending RHP Nathan Eovaldi (8-4, 3.67) to the mound against LHP Kris Bubic (2-3, 4.47) for the Royals.
