In Boston Bruins news on Wednesday regarding their defense corps, it was announced that the team has given Brandon Carlo a six year contract extension. Also via an announcement on his own personal Instagram account, Kevan Miller has decided to retire from the NHL at just 33 years of age.
Carlo earns 24.6 million dollars total with the new extension (4.1 million per year cap hit). Carlo has spent all five seasons with the Bruins. He only played in 27 games this past season due to a concussion suffered at the hands of Washington Capitals defenseman Tom Wilson. He made his professional debut April 1, 2016 with the Providence Bruins, and later that year his NHL debut on October 13 against Columbus where he notched an assist. Overall he has appeared in 324 games and has 15 goals and 40 assists.
Miller, who has been hampered with injuries, spent all eight NHL seasons with Boston appearing in 352 games and scoring 13 goals with 58 assists. He was undrafted out of the University of Vermont, signed with Providence of the AHL in 2010, promoted to Boston in 2013, and had been in the regular defensive rotation with the big club since 2015. He stated in the announcement, “Although my spirit for the game is there, unfortunately my body isn’t. My overall health and my family are now the priority. This was not an easy decision to make but it’s time to hang up my skates. It’s hard to put into words what it means to wear the spoked ‘B’. It was an honor to put on that jersey on each night.” Carlo also signed the Instagram post, “Forever a Bruin”.
