The New York Yankees picked a good time to come alive with the bats on Saturday evening scoring four times in the eighth inning, coming back to defeat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 at Fenway Park.
Boston got a single run in each of the first three innings starting with a Kike Hernandez triple high off the wall in left center in the bottom of the first. Hernandez would score on the play when a throw into third by Rougned Odor sailed over the dugout and it was 1-0. JD Martinez started the second with a double down the left field line, and was knocked in when Kevin Plawecki with one out hit a wall ball double off the monster. Jarren Duran reached second base in the third on a second error by Odor, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rafael Devers which was his 80th RBI on the season for a 3-0 advantage. Nathan Eovaldi was excellent on the mound, going into the eighth inning before being lifted with two outs after allowing his second hit of the frame and first run of the day. New York (51-46) then took advantage against Adam Ottavino when Odor hit a two-run double off the monster in left to tie it, and took the lead when Gleyber Torres looped one down the right field line for the game winning single. The Red Sox (60-39) had one more chance against Arnoldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth. After Chapman got the first two hitters for a quick two outs, pinch hitter Hunter Renfoe walked and another pinch hitter Christian Vazquez hit a ground rule double down the right field line to put runners at second and third. The Yankees closer though got Hernandez swinging to end the game. The loss snaps a four game Red Sox win streak, and also a 45-0 record they owned this season when leading by three or more runs in a game.
Eovaldi in a no-decision was charged with two runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out eight in 7.2 innings. Ottavino (2-3) got the loss along with his fourth blown save. Plawecki led the offense with two hits. Brett Gardner and Estevan Florial had two hits a piece for New York, and Jameson Taillon (6-4) would pick up the win allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in 7.0 innings. Jonathan Loisaga got his 12th hold and Chapman his 18th save. The Yankees win is the first at Fenway in six tries this season (1-5). Boston will go for the series win in the finale of the four game set on Sunday afternoon at 1:10, sending LHP Martin Perez (7-6, 4.16 ERA) to the hill. New York will have RHP Domingo German (4-5, 4.71) toeing the rubber.
