The Boston Red Sox only made one notable deal during the MLB trade deadline, which ended at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Boston on Thursday night acquired All-Star outfielder Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals in exchange for minor league pitcher Aldo Ramirez (Single A Salem). To make room on the 40 man roster, the Red Sox designated relief pitcher Brandon Workman for assignment. Schwarber, who has been out since early July with a hamstring injury, has been working out and is expected to return soon. He was on a historic tear before the injury, hitting .338 with 16 homeruns from June 12-July 2. He also tied a MLB record for most homers in a 10 game span with 12 of them from June 19-June 29. Overall he is hitting .253 with 25 homers and 53 RBI so far this season.
In another deal, Boston acquired right handed relief pitcher Hansel Robles from the Minnesota Twins for minor league pitcher Alex Scherff (Double A Portland). Robles has appeared in 45 games for Minnesota this season with a 3-4 record, 43 strikeouts in 44 innings, and a 4.91 earned run average. Late on Friday afternoon, it was also revealed the Sox would also be picking up left handed relief pitcher Austin Davis from the Pittsburgh Pirates for INF/OF Michael Chavis. Davis has appeared in 10 games in Pittsburgh with a 5.59 ERA in 9.2 innings. Chavis who has been in the Boston organization since 2014 was hitting just .190 in limited time this season for the big club (15 for 79), while also batting .263 at Triple A Worcester in 107 plate appearances with six homers.
