Celtics acquire one player in draft, three more in two seperate deals on Friday

July 31, 2021

It’s been a busy week for the Boston Celtics. Boston had one pick in the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday night, and then made two seperate trades on Friday that includes Moses Brown and Tristan Thompson headed elsewhere.

In a rare draft where the C’s only had one pick, they would select 6 foot 5 inch guard Juhann Begarin out of France at #45. He has a 7 foot wingspan, but is expected to be a draft and stash candidate for Boston. After the Kemba Walker trade they could of used a guard but is unlikely they found that with this pick, and is highly likely Begarin won’t even see any playing time this coming season.

In a trade with the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, the Celtics may have found their guard when they traded the 21 year old center Brown to Dallas in exchange for Jason Richardson. Brown has only played in 52 career NBA games most recently with the Oklahoma City Thunder, while Boston gets back Richardson a veteran who averaged 12.1 points per game this past season. Brown was just acquired on June 18 as part of the Walker deal that also brought Al Horford back to Beantown. In a three team deal, the green also traded Tristan Thompson who goes to the Sacramento Kings while the Atlanta Hawks send the C’s guard Kris Dunn and center Bruno Fernando. Dunn is coming off an injury and only played in four regular season games with Atlanta this past season, while seeing a total of just 33 minutes in the playoffs. If healthy the former Providence College star could provide some strong wing play especially on the defensive end. Fernando, who turns 23 in August, played in 33 games with the Hawks in 2020-21 averaging 1.5 points. He was a 34th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Many believe Boston could use one or more of these recent acquisitions to make another deal by the end of the summer. Stay tuned.
