The PCHS Pirates will look to contend in a tough class C.
“We are looking to have a good run this season and hopefully get back into the playoffs,”Gilbert said. “We have some strong teams on our schedule like Bucksport, Penquis and PVHS who always have strong teams.”
The Pirates lost a lot of talent but also have a strong returning group, especially on defense.
“There is a good number of returning players that got some strong minutes last year. We have some players that have good experience and very good soccer IQs and that will help us win some games,”Gilbert said. “We have most of our defense returning which will really help and support our mid field this year. Matt Chadbourne, Alex Lyon, Matt Burdin are all returning with Trevor Hathorn playing a defensive roll this year who has a lot of game experience. Junior Christian Homechuck and sophomore Scott Chadbourne are both returning players who have great IQs of the game and will be two to watch out for. Freshman Josh Harrington will also be a key contributor even only a freshman has a great desire for the game. Two other returning starters are Hunter Martell and Gabe Soctomah bring experience up front. Sophomore Ben Higgins will also be seeing a lot of playing time. New goalie Dawson Simpson is very active and excited to watch him grow this year. We lost five strong seniors from last year who were a big part of our team. I am hoping to see some of these guys fill in those rolls and take charge when we need them . Having some new pieces it will take a bit of time for them to adapt and get comfortable in there rolls. We also move up a class from D to C this year which playing bigger schools with more numbers may hurt us.”
PCHS will look to take 2020 as a positive. They played schools in higher classes and competed and will hope to use that experience going into 2021.
“2020 was a tough season for us we had a very good class D team and was hoping to make a strong run in the playoffs,”Gilbert said. We played schools like John Bapst, Orono, Central and FA. Even though we played much bigger schools we did compete and the players learned a lot and were pushed to work harder.”
PCHS will start the season at Howland against PVHS on September 4th. The home opener will be September 7th against Bucksport.
