September 4, 2021

After three straight losses in overtime to begin their season, the Maine Field Hockey team had their luck change on Saturday afternoon getting a double overtime game winner from Poppy Lambert to defeat the Providence College Friars 2-1 at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.

Brooke Sulinski made it 1-0 Maine with a goal 4:33 into the first quarter. That lead would hold until early in the fourth when Providence (2-1) evened things on a goal by Niamh Gowing 1:30 into the period. Both teams went scoreless through the first 10 minute overtime. In the double overtime, Lambert converted off a penalty corner off an assist from Tereza Holubcova with just 1:20 remaining as the Black Bears improve to 1-3.

Maine won the shots on goal battle 11-9, and the penalty corner opportunities 12-6. Mia Borley made eight saves in net for the win, while Asia Porter made nine in the loss for the Friars. The Black Bears head back out on the road for a pair of games in Evanston, Illinois against Kent State on Saturday and Northwestern on Sunday. Both contests are slated for a 1 p.m. start.
