Ali Gilman scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Penobscot Valley girls soccer team to a 6-0 win at Searsport on Wednesday afternoon.
Ashlyn St. Cyr put the Howlers on top just 45 seconds into the game, as she received an Ellie Austin pass, got past a defender, and connected on an opposite-foot goal into the right hand corner. Gilman would make the score 2-0 when she put another Austin assist into the back of the net. The score would remain that way through halftime.
Gilman struck again 15 minutes into the second half, when she received a lead pass ahead of the defense from fellow senior Julia Durost, and put it in left-footed past the goalie. Minutes later it appeared that Gilman might have another goal, as she went one on one with the goalie, but instead sent the ball across the 6 yard line to Austin who scored. Maggie LeBlanc put away a penalty kick to extend the lead to five. Finally, Emma Potter one-touched a rocket of a shot from about 25 yards that a defensive player had cleared, that skimmed the bottom of the crossbar and settled in the back of the net.
PVHS’s defense, led by goalie Emilee Ireland, recorded their second shutout in as many games to start the season. Ireland stopped six shots on the afternoon, while Searsport (1-1) goalie Josh Bragdon tallied 28 saves.
