The Boston Red Sox scored six runs in the 10th inning on Wednesday evening, taking the rubber game of a three game set with a 9-4 win over the Seattle Mariners at T Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington.
Boston (83-65) took an early 3-0 lead when Hunter Renfroe hit a solo homerun in the first inning, and Kevin Plawecki had an RBI groundout and Jose Iglesias an RBI double in the second. Seattle tied it in the bottom of the third when Jarred Kelenic scored on a Renfroe throwing error on a single by Tom Murphy, and Kyle Seager added a two-run double to make it 3-3. Both teams had chances to jump ahead. The Red Sox had two runners on base and two outs in both the seventh and eighth innings but couldn’t score, and the Mariners had the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but Adam Ottavino got out of that with a strikeout of Kelenic. The guests moved ahead on a passed ball scoring Jack Lopez in the 10th, with the eventual game winner coming on a JD Martinez infield single that scored Renfroe. Kyle Schwarber added on a two-run single and Christian Vazquez a two-run double to cap off the big inning and give Boston their first series win in Seattle in eight years.
Tanner Houck got a no-decision in his start on the hill allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Ottavino (7-3) got the win with 1.1 perfect innings. Iglesias was the only Sox batter with multiple hits with two. Eric Swanson (0-3) was roughed up in the 10th and took the loss for the Mariners (78-68), in relief of starter Marco Gonzales. Kelenic had two hits to lead the M’s. Boston has Thursday off before opening up a three game series at Fenway Park Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles. The starting pitchers for game one haven’t been announced yet.
