Eovaldi struggles, Sox win streak ends in loss to the Yankees

September 24, 2021

The New York Yankees hammered Nathan Eovaldi for seven runs over just 2.2 innings on Friday night, as they defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-3 at Fenway Park. The loss snaps a seven game win streak for Boston, who remains one game ahead of New York for the top American League wild card spot.

New York (87-67) immediately took a 3-0 lead on an RBI double by Aaron Judge, an RBI groundout by Giancarlo Stanton, and an RBI single by Gleyber Torres in the top of the first inning. The biggest shot of the night was an opposite field three-run homerun by Stanton into the Red Sox bullpen in the top of the third. Boston (88-66) got a three-run homer from Rafael Devers down the right field line in the sixth for their only scoring.

Eovaldi (10-9) allowed seven hits with two walks and didn’t strike out anyone in one of his worst starts against New York in his Boston career. It’s only the second time he’s allowed more than two earned runs in 11 starts in a Red Sox uniform vs the Yankees. Kike Hernandez had two hits to lead the way in the defeat. Gerrit Cole (16-8) allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings to pick up the win for the Bronx Bombers. Stanton and Torres had three hits each, as New York wins their fourth straight game. Game two of the key three game series is Saturday at 4:10 p.m. with Nick Pivetta (9-7, 4.63 ERA) on the hill for the Sox, against Nestor Cortes (2-2, 2.79) for the Yanks.
