BANGOR, Maine- The Husson University Eagles scored all 26 of their points in the second quarter Saturday afternoon, and then held off a rally by the Springfield College Pride to pick up a 26-21 non-conference football win at the Winkin Sports Complex in the annual homecoming game. This was also the last non-conference matchup of the season for the Eagles, who open conference play in two weeks.
Husson wide receiver Jon Bell opened the scoring when he took a Nic Visser pass and went 37 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. The extra point was no good and Husson led 6-0. Springfield (1-3) took their only lead of the day 7-6 when Tim Callahan found the endzone on a four yard run just 3:25 later, with the key play being a 37 yard quarterback run by David Wells to set it up. The Eagles took the lead for good when Visser rolled out left to right and found his tight end Aidan Hogan wide open along the right sideline, and Hogan took it 54 yards for the the score to make it 13-7. Bell ran in his second score of the game on a reverse from 12 yards, and Tyler Walls caught a short one yard pass from Visser for another TD with two seconds left in the quarter and Husson led 26-7 at the half.
Springfield shut down the Husson offense in the second half, and got a 55 yard interception return for a touchdown by Aiden Lewin near the end of the third quarter to cut it to 26-14. Isaiah Cashwell would make it a one score game when he ran one in from 14 yards with 1:03 left in the game. The Pride then needed to recover an onside kick to have a chance, and they did just that. Unfortunately for Springfield though Walls had called for a fair catch, and the Eagles got the ball and ran out the clock to improve to 3-1.
Visser went 19-30 passing for 325 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. The Husson ground attack was held in check, with Garrett Poussard leading the way with 48 yards on 20 carries. Bell had eight catches for 130 yards, Halls five for 106 yards, and Hogan three for 66 yards and they each had a receiving score with Bell adding the rushing TD. Frank Curran led the defense with eight total tackles, two for loss. Walls was just 4-11 passing in the loss for Springfield for 39 yards, while adding 64 yards on the ground. Callahan was the top offensive producer with 18 rushes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Amari Bilal had six total tackles to lead the Pride defense. Husson now has a week off before opening up Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday, October 9 when they host Curry College at 1 p.m.
