Poppy Lambert scored twice including a game winning goal in the third quarter Sunday afternoon, leading the Maine Black Bears to a 3-2 win over the Stanford Cardinal in America East Field Hockey action at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.
Stanford (2-3, 1-1 America East) started the scoring when Haley Mossmer found the back of the cage with 55 seconds left in the first quarter. Maine tied it in the closing seconds of the first half off a penalty corner with Lambert making it 1-1 headed into halftime. Chloe Walton put the Bears ahead for good scoring 11:50 into the third, with Lambert following that up 1:10 later with the game winner to make it 3-1 on an assist by Madisyn Hartley. Mossmer would tally her second of the day for the Cardinal with 1:57 left in the game, but it was too little too late as Maine held on for their fourth straight victory. Stanford is playing this season without a goalie, and only 14 players on their roster.
Mia Borley made four saves in net in the win for Maine, who improves to 5-5 and 2-0 in America East. Stanford held the advantage with shots on goal 6-3, with the Black Bears scoring on all three of their chances. Maine returns to action on Friday when they travel to Albany for another America East matchup at 1 p.m.
