Howlers top Woodland on Homecoming behind Austin’s 2 goals

October 3, 2021

At Howland on Homecoming on Saturday, Freshman Ellie Austin scored a goal in each half to help propel Penobscot Valley to a 3-0 win over Woodland. PVHS celebrated their five seniors as well.

The Howlers got on the board about 10 minutes into the game, as Senior Maggie LeBlanc stole the ball from a Woodland player near mid-field and streaked up the right sideline.  She proceeded to cross it to the near post, where Austin and Woodland keeper Victoria Siering converged on the ball, with Austin coming away with it and putting it in the net.
The Dragons held their ground, as both teams went scoreless the next 50 minutes of play.  Then with 18 minutes remaining in the game, 8th grader Lila Cummings received the ball near the endline, pivoted, and sent a low cross to Sophomore Ashlyn St. Cyr.  St. Cyr settled the ball and scored with her opposite foot.
Less than a minute later, St. Cyr took a pass near the sideline at midfield, drew the outside defender wide, and sent the ball to Austin in the center of the field.  Austin went by the defender one-on-one and scored past Siering for the third and final goal of the game.
Emilee Ireland stopped the three shots she faced, as PVHS improves to 6-1 and currently sit in 2nd place in Northern Maine Class D.  Siering saved 23 of 30 shots, as Woodland drops to 3-2-1 and are in 7th place in D North.  The Howlers face Bangor Christian at home Monday, while the Dragons host Lee Academy the same day.
