Austin’s hat trick helps propel Penobscot Valley girls over Penquis

October 6, 2021

At Milo Tuesday, Freshman Ellie Austin scored the first two goals of the game, and then her third with 10 minutes remaining to complete the hat trick, as the Howlers defeated the short-handed Patriots 9-0.

Penobscot Valley would hold a 3-0 halftime lead thanks to the two goals from Austin, as well as another from Holly Loring. Loring scored the other goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, unassisted.
The Penquis defense held their ground however, and kept the Howlers scoreless for the next 33 minutes despite constant pressure and attacks. Penobscot Valley finally broke the scoring open, with six players scoring in the final 14 and a half minutes of the game, started off by 8th grader Rylee Moulton, who scored her first ever varsity goal. Her goal came from a beautiful lead pass by senior Rebecca Carson, and Moulton was able to take it one on one with the goalie. Her goal was followed by goals from Austin, Julia Durost, Lila Cummings, Emma Potter, and Ashlyn St. Cyr. Carson added 2 more assists on the day, finishing with 3 total, while St. Cyr and Cummings would also notch an assist. Penquis had a great late-game opportunity, but Destiny Siebert’s attempt went just over the crossbar.
Senior Emilee Ireland recorded her 7th shutout of the season for the 2nd place (D North) Howlers, who improve to 8-1. She saved 3 of 5 shots. Four Patriots (Rachel Broussard, Addison Conklin, Jessica Broussard, and Imaan Ali) combined in net to stop 35 of 49 shots. Penquis, who was without some key players during this matchup, drops to 2-8, and will travel to Dexter on Friday. Penobscot Valley hosts Greenville on Saturday.
