The University of Maine women’s hockey team swept past Long Island University in East Meadow, New York on Friday and Saturday afternoon in non-conference play for their first two wins of the 2021-22 season.
On Friday, the Sharks of LIU got first period goals from Abbie Latorella and Matilda af Bjur and had a 2-1 lead over Maine after the opening 20 minutes. Maddie Giordano had the Black Bears goal. That lead held until late in the second when Ally Johnson tied it for the guests at 19:34. Taylor Leech then had the game winner 2:18 into the third period, and Nicole Pateman capped off a 4-2 Maine victory with a powerplay tally at 19:00.
Loryn Porter started in net and played the first period making six saves, while Jordan Mattison played the final 40 and picked up the win with nine saves. Celine Tedenby had two assists, while Morgan Trimper, Giordano, Ella Maclean, Ida Kuoppala, and Elise Murphy had one helper each. Tindra Holm made 33 saves in the loss for LIU.
On Saturday, Maine took a 2-0 first period lead only to see LIU rally and eventually tie it in the third period but Tedenby would score the game winner at 10:23 of the third to sweep the weekend with a 3-2 Black Bears win. Alyssa Wruble scored at 1:47 of the first and Leech followed with another marker at 8:39 for Maine. Maggie Culp got the Sharks on the board on the powerplay at 18:20 of the opening 20 to slice the margin in half, then the hosts later tied it when Latorella scored her second of the weekend unassisted at 8:17 of the third. The winner by Tedenby was scored 2:06 later off an assist by Mira Seregely.
Mattison got her second win of the weekend in net with 15 saves. Courtney Colarullo, Amalie Andersen, and Tedenby had the other assists on the day for Maine. Kenzie Harmison made 25 saves in the loss for LIU. The Sharks, who are just in their third season of Division I hockey, drop to 0-6 on the season. The Black Bears are now 2-3, and open Hockey East Conference play Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. at home when they host Connecticut and Northeastern respectively.
