At Woodland, PVHS got goal contributions from three different players, as the Howlers took care of the Dragons 3-0 to wrap up their regular season. Penobscot Valley recorded their seventh straight shutout win in a row, and it was the eleventh game of the season in which they didn’t allow a goal.
Ali Gilman got the scoring started about nine minutes into the game, when she received a pass from fellow-senior Julia Durost across the top of the 18 yard line. Gilman settled it to her feet and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. A missed Penalty Kick by Woodland could have tied the score, but it went just wide of the post. Five minutes later, Rebecca Carson sent a long pass to Holly Loring, who attacked the right side and sent a perfectly placed ball across the six yard line and away from goalkeeper Victoria Siering toward a streaking Ashlyn St. Cyr. A Woodland defender, knowing that St. Cyr had an empty net in front of her, stretched out to stop the pass, but the ball deflected off her leg and into the goal. Loring was credited with the score.
The game remained 2-0 well into the second half, when eighth-grader Lila Cummings had another strong attack from the left side. Her shot didn’t go in, but it drew a hand-ball penalty on a Dragon defender, setting up a Penalty Kick. Junior Kaya Loring calmly finished off the PK for the final goal of the game.
Howler goalie Emilee Ireland saved 3 shots in net, and recorded her 11th shutout of the season, which is one shy of the school record held by her older sister Sami. Siering saved 29 of 38 for Woodland, who dropped to 6-5-1, and will wrap up their season hosting Searsport on Monday.
Penobscot Valley finished the regular season having scored 53 goals and only allowing 4. Of the 18 girls on the PVHS roster (5 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 3 Freshmen, and 5 eighth graders), 14 different players have scored, including Ellie Austin (10), Maggie LeBlanc (7), Holly Loring (7), Ali Gilman (6), Ashlyn St. Cyr (6), Lila Cummings (4), Julia Durost (3), Rebecca Carson (2), Emma Potter (2), Lauryn Smart (2), Kaya Loring (1), Mia Neal (1), Allie LeBlanc (1), and Rylee Moulton (1). PVHS will likely host a playoff game next Friday.
