Maine shutout in Hockey East opener

Jordan Harris had a goal and two assists and Devon Levi stopped all 32 shots he faced in net, as the #20 Northeastern Huskies shutout the Maine Black Bears 5-0 in men’s Hockey East action at Matthews Arena in Boston, Massachusetts Friday night.

Maine, playing their first Hockey East game of the season, was outshot 17-3 in the opening period. Jack Hughes gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead with the eventual game winner at 7:25 of the opening stanza. The Black Bears were able to tighten those shots on goal with some sustained pressure in the second, but were unable to solve the sophomore netminder Levi. The Huskies extended the advantage on goals by Harris at 11:50 of the middle period, and then went up 3-0 with a tally by Matt Demelis 2:57 later. The guests had three powerplay opportunities in the third but again came up empty. Maine is now 1-19 in five games on the powerplay to start the season. Riley Hughes scored shorthanded at 4:38, and Sam Colangelo scored even strength exactly a minute later that ended the scoring. Northeastern improves their record to 4-3-0 overall, and also picks up their first Hockey East win (1-2-0).

Matthew Thiessen made 37 saves in goal in his third consecutive start. Maine falls to 0-4-1, 0-1 in Hockey East. The Black Bears were 0-3 on the powerplay, while the Huskies went 0-2. Levi recorded his fourth shutout so far on the season, as all four NU victories have come by the shutout variety. The teams will finish off their two game series on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
