Bailey Donovan and Sydney Allen scored 16 points a piece on Monday night, as Husson University pulled away for a 68-32 win over New England College in a non-conference women’s basketball season opener for the Eagles at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor.
Brianna Pierreval hit a layup 1:05 into the first quarter to give New England College their only lead of the night by one point, but from there it was all Husson. The Eagles led by as many as five in the first and took a two point advantage after the opening 10 minutes at 13-11. Donovan scored nine points in a row to open the second, Allen made 1-2 from the foul line, and Maci Beals nailed a three-pointer to cap off a 13-0 Husson run over the first 4:19 to extend the lead to 26-11. The hosts lead went to 18 and was 34-18 at halftime. That would balloon to as many as 36 in the fourth quarter as the Pilgrims were outscored 34-14 in the second 20 minutes, which was the final margin of victory.
Donovan added seven rebounds and Allen added four to their game high point totals. Megan Peach had seven points and six rebounds, while Sophia McVicar, Trinity Montigny, Cassie Urso, and Makaelyn Porter each added five points a piece. Husson shot 44% from the floor to just 20% for New England College, and also won the turnover battle 24-14 which they turned into a 32-14 advantage in points. Pierreval led the Pilgrims (0-2) with 11 points and four rebounds. The Eagles are on the road for the first time this weekend starting Friday night at 7 p.m. as they compete in the Brandeis University Tip-Off Tournament with their first opponent being Connecticut College.
