The Husson Eagles men’s basketball team fell behind by 14 points in the first half Tuesday night, only to rally for a two point second half lead but would fall late 92-91 to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in non-conference action at the Rockwell Cage in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Husson never led in the first half of play, as the Engineers were red hot from the three-point stripe hitting 11 of them over the first 20 minutes and building the lead to 32-18 with 7:40 left. The Eagles would cut into that deficit and slice it to 50-42 at the half. MIT (1-1) had several 12 point leads early in the second half, before Husson stormed back and would tie it 76-76 on a Jeremy Moronta layup with 6:57 to go. Justice Kendall gave the guests their only lead with a slicing layup in the paint 57 seconds later, but a three-pointer by Alex Cho on the next Engineers possession put the hosts up for good. After Charles Rich missed two free throws with nine seconds left, the Eagles had one last opportunity but a jumper in the paint by Moronta for the win came up short as the buzzer sounded.
DJ Bussey led 1-1 Husson with 20 points. Kendall finished with 17 points, three assists, and two steals. Justin Thompson added 15 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Cam Wood and Moronta both got into double figures as well with 13 and 12 points respectively. Giannis Chatziveroglou led MIT with 24 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Cho had 22 points, five rebounds, and nine assists. The Engineers finished 16-34 from the three-point arc, while the Eagles were 9-20. Husson opens their home schedule when they welcome in UMaine-Fort Kent to Newman Gym on Friday night.
