The Western New England Golden Bears scored the last 28 points on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Husson Eagles 35-10 at Golden Bear Stadium in Springfield, Massachusetts in a Commonwealth Coast Conference football matchup.
Garrett Poussard had the first score of the game as he had a six yard touchdown run just over five minutes in to make it 7-0 Husson. WNEU (7-3, 5-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference) responded to that with a 14 play, 82 yard drive with quarterback Carlos Martin Nieto scoring on a two yard run to tie it. The game remained tied until Aaron Paradis put the visiting Eagles up for the final time with a 29 yard field goal early in the third quarter at 10-7. Ian Britt had the game winner for Western New England about three minutes later on a 22 yard TD run. Britt added another from one yard out late in the period to extend the advantage to 21-10 Golden Bears. In the fourth, Martin Nieto had an 18 yard scoring pass to Steven Fedorchak and Ryan Smith added a seven yard TD run with just under three minutes to play. WNEU finishes second in the CCC, while Husson ends up in third to end the season with a 7-3 overall record and 4-2 in the conference. Endicott College gets the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament finishing as CCC Champions at 8-2, 5-1.
Nic Visser went 13-31 passing in the loss for Husson for 159 yards and one interception. Poussard had 26 carries for 106 yards and the first quarter touchdown. Jon Bell had five receptions for 100 yards. Kaleb Caron and Tucker Buzzell each had eight total tackles to lead the defense. Martin Nieto went 12-25 passing for 148 yards with one touchdown, and also added 12 rushes for 66 yards and a score. Britt ran 16 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Fedorchak had five receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown and also completed a 36 yard pass. Joshua Salem had 15 total tackles to lead the Golden Bears on defense.
