Quarterback Austin Seavey had a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and the Foxcroft Academy Ponies made a big defensive play late to cap off an undefeated season and secure a 19-16 victory over the Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall Dale Ramblers in a Class D State Title High School football contest at Cameron Stadium in Bangor Friday night. It is the eighth football state championship in school history for Foxcroft, and the first since 2012 when they were in Class C.
Foxcroft took the opening kickoff and immediately marched deep into Winthrop territory to the 21 yard line. A fumble however by Gideon Topolski would turn the ball over to the Ramblers. Winthrop (7-2) turned that into points on a 78 yard drive when Dominic Trott scored on a three yard run, and Robbie Feeney ran in a two-point conversion to make it 8-0. The Ponies came right back and got on the scoreboard when Seavey connected with Crocker for a 13 yard TD pass in the final minute of the first quarter. The extra point kick by Kemsley Marsters though was no good. The score was still 8-6 in the middle of the second quarter when Foxcroft was forced to punt. A bad snap however to Marsters resulted in a big play for the Ponies. Marsters decided not to try to kick it and put the ball away and ran 25 yards for a first down, which then led to a 52 yard touchdown run by Jesse Drury. Crocker was no good on a two-point run attempt, and the Ponies led 12-8 at the halftime break.
With the second drive of the third quarter by Winthrop, they would jump back in front. Aided by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty enforced to Foxcroft for 15 yards, Trott scored his second touchdown of the night on a two yard run with just 29 seconds left in the period. Feeney ran in his second two-point conversion and it was 16-12 Ramblers headed to the fourth quarter. It didn’t take the Ponies long to get down the field, as Seavey scored from three yards out with 11:33 left that turned into the eventual game winner. Marsters added the extra point kick. It looked as if FA had a chance to salt away the victory when quarterback Andrew Foster had a fourth and six pass from the Ponies 47 yard line knocked away by Jadon Richard at the 30 with seven minutes to go to turn it over on downs. Seavey though on a fourth and short inside the Winthrop 30 would attempt a run and would fumble and the Ramblers would recover and have one more chance with just over three minutes remaining. With the ball near midfield, defensive lineman Anthony Smith came up with the play of the night sacking Foster on a fourth and 10 that would allow Foxcroft to take over on downs and run out the clock.
Seavey finished the night 11-18 passing for 88 yards and one touchdown. He also added nine rushes for 53 yards and the game winning score. Drury ran nine times for 125 yards and a TD, while Crocker had five receptions for 66 yards. Crocker also led the defense with 12 tackles. Foxcroft finishes an undefeated season at 11-0. Foster was 3-6 passing for 26 yards in the loss for Winthrop. He also had four runs for 16 yards. Feeney ran 19 times for 95 yards, while Trott had 10 rushes for 71 yards and both touchdowns for the Ramblers.
