The Maine Black Bears got a decisive goal from Donavan Villeneuve-Houle in a three player shootout Friday night, gaining an extra point in the Hockey East standings as they officially ended in a 2-2 tie with #19 Boston College through regulation and a five minute overtime at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Boston College struck early much like they did in a 6-2 win on Thursday night. Jack St. Ivany scored at 1:20 of the opening period on assists from Marc McLaughlin and Patrick Giles to make it 1-0 Eagles. The score stayed 1-0 until Lynden Breen tied it for Maine at 11:45 of the second period. Donavan Villeneuve-Houle gave the Black Bears their only lead of the two game series when he tallied at 3:41 of the third period on helpers from Breen and Jakub Sirota. Giles had the answer at 11:39 for BC with the marker that eventually sent the game to overtime. The teams skated through the five minute, three on three overtime without any scoring as the game officially ended in a tie. A three player shootout though would decide who picked up the extra conference point. Maine would win the shootout on a goal by Villeneuve-Houle, edging BC 2-1. Brad Morrissey had the other goal for the guests in the shootout format.
Victor Ostman made 29 saves in net for Maine, as their record now goes to 1-9-2, 1-6-1 in Hockey East. Breen had a goal and an assist. Eric Dop also made 29 stops for Boston College. Giles had a goal and an assist. The Eagles are now 7-5-2, 5-3-1. Both teams went 0-1 on the powerplay. The Black Bears host UMass-Lowell for a single game at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland next Saturday at 5 p.m.
