Mira Seregely scored a game winning goal late in the second period Sunday afternoon, as the Maine Black Bears held off the Providence College Friars 3-2 in women’s Hockey East action at the Alfond Arena in Orono.
Taylor Leetch got the scoring started at 2:22 of the first period to make it 1-0 Maine. Caroline Peterson tied it for Providence at 35 seconds of the second period, before the Black Bears jumped back ahead with a marker from Jennifer Costa at 16:53 of the middle period. It was the first of the season for the Dartmouth transfer. Seregely then notched the game winner just 1:47 later at 18:30 on assists from Olivia King and Leetch. The Friars pulled goalie Sandra Abstreiter with 3:11 left in the game, and got an extra attacker goal from Lindsay Bochna with 26 seconds to go but ran out of time. PC falls to 4-5-4, 3-4-2 in Hockey East.
Loryn Porter made 41 saves in net in the win for Maine. Leetch had a goal and an assist, while King, Morgan Trimper, Maddie Giordano, Ally Johnson, and Rachel Enzler had one assist each. The Black Bears are now 6-8-1, 4-5-1 and are unbeaten in their last five games. Hayley Lunny had two assists for Providence, and Abstreiter made 19 saves as the Friars outshot the hosts 43-22. Maine welcomes in Clarkson for a two game non-conference series on Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. The Golden Knights come to town with a 12-2-2 record.
