Central Connecticut State put four players in double figures and led from start to finish on Tuesday night, knocking off the Maine Black Bears 64-56 in a men’s basketball non-conference matchup at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
CCSU (1-5) out of the Northeast Conference bolted out to a 7-2 lead and would take as much as a 12 point advantage in the first half, leading 31-21 at the break. Maine shot just 30% from the floor in the first half (6-20). The Black Bears would slice it to just a two point deficit on two free throws by Adefolalrin Adetogun with 12:24 remaining in the game. With the Blue Devils up four with less than 10 minutes to go, they pulled away again using an 8-2 run to increase the lead back to 10 and the hosts never got closer than seven the rest of the way as CCSU notched their first victory of the season.
Stephane Ingo led Maine in the loss with 14 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. LeChaun DuHart and Vukasin Masic each had eight points. Duhart had three rebounds and two steals, and Masic had six rebounds and four assists. Adetogun and Ata Turgut chipped in with six points a piece, as the Black Bears see their record drop to 2-3. Tre Mitchell led Central Connecticut State with 12 points, and Davonte Sweatman had 11. Jayden Brown and Nigel Scanterbury also got into double figures with 10 points each. Maine hits the road on Sunday when they visit Bradley University out of the Missouri Valley Conference at 3 p.m.
