Maine continues to struggle on powerplay in shutout loss to UMass-Lowell

Owen Savory stopped all 29 shots he faced, and the Maine Black Bears continued to struggle on the powerplay going 0-4 on Saturday evening in a 2-0 loss to the #15 UMass-Lowell Riverhawks before 4,176 fans at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland in men’s Hockey East action.

Blake Wells picked up the game winner at 14:22 of the first period on assists from Sam Knoblauch and Connor Sodergren. Maine (1-10-2, 1-7-1 Hockey East) had two powerplay chances in the second and two more in the third to try to pick up the equalizer, but couldn’t convert on any. The Black Bears are now 3-40 on the extra man so far this season (7%). Ryan Brushett would add an unassisted goal at 17:17 of the third for the Riverhawks.

Victor Ostman made 24 saves in net in the loss for Maine. Adrien Bisson had five shots on net and Lynden Breen had four on the night for the Black Bears. It was the third shutout of the season for the senior Savory, as UMass-Lowell improves to 8-2-2 and 6-1-0 in Hockey East. Maine returns home to face Vermont next Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m.
