At Howland, Penobscot Valley’s defense held the Patriots to 3 second-quarter points that helped stretch their lead, and allowed them to pull away with the win, 52-35.
Senior center Ryan Thompson set the tone in the first quarter, as PVHS made a strong effort to pound the ball inside. Thompson scored eight points during the frame, including three baskets and two free throws. Point guard Gabe Reed scored four points as well, as the Howlers held a 12-9 lead. Colton White paced Bangor Christian with four of his team’s nine points.
Defense was the key to the second quarter, as Penobscot Valley only allowed three points while scoring 12, extending their lead to 25-12. Isaac Doore paced his team with half of those points. The third quarter was a back and forth battle, with PVHS having an 11-7 edge in points. Senior Andy Williams got some good looks against a zone defense, knocking down two 3-pointers. B.C.’s Jason Libby added four points, working hard to keep his team in the game.
Libby and Conrad Straubel started catching fire from outside the fourth, connecting on two 3-pointers each en route to a 16-point quarter. However, PVHS received scoring from 6 different players in the frame, and went 7-10 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
Thompson’s game-high 15 points and Reed’s 10 led the way for the Howlers, who improve to 1-1 and travel to Guilford to face PCHS on Thursday. Williams finished with nine, Gabe Castonguay tallied seven, and Doore netted six Other scorers for PVHS were Colin Dunn (2), Kaden Loring (2), and Joel Lyons (1).
Bangor Christian had three scorers for the game, each with double digits. Libby’s team-high 14 points paced the Patriots, while White and Straubel finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. They host the Schenck Wolverines on Thursday.
