BREWER- The Brewer Witches never trailed on Friday night, getting a game high 22 points from Brock Flagg for a 57-46 victory over the Nokomis Warriors in a Class A North boys basketball game played at Brewer High School.
Flagg started his big night with a three point play, while him and Ryder Goodwin also knocked down a three-pointer each as Brewer raced out a 9-2 advantage early. The Witches led 15-10 after the opening eight minutes. Nokomis cut it to 17-14 early in the second, thanks to Ace Flagg who scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. The hosts pushed the lead to the biggest of the opening 16 minutes at 23-14 thanks to a 6-0 spurt with two from the line by Flagg, a basket by Colby Smith, and two from the line from Aaron Newcomb. The Warriors ended the second on a 7-0 run to get within a point at 25-24 at the halftime break.
A free throw by the Warriors Cooper Flagg tied the game 27-27 early in the third quarter, but a three-pointer by Goodwin pushed the Witches ahead to stay. Cooper Flagg tried to keep Nokomis in the game including three loud dunks and scoring 10 of his 16 in the quarter, but a three-pointer by Brady Saunders and three from the line by Goodwin when he was fouled on a three point attempt with less than three seconds to go made it 43-35 Brewer headed to the fourth. Nokomis (1-1) got within six with 1:27 left on a three-pointer by Dawson Townsend, but the Witches were too much scoring the last five points to put it away.
Brock Flagg added six rebounds to his game high point total for 3-0 Brewer. Goodwin had 17 points and five rebounds. Cameron Hughes added eight points, Saunders and Smith had four a piece, and Newcomb had two free throws for two points to round out the scoring. The twin freshman brothers Cooper and Ace Flagg led Nokomis in the loss. Cooper had 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Ace ended up with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Madden White chipped in eight points, Connor Sides had five, and Townsend had three points.
