The University of Maine once again fell behind by three goals on Saturday night, and would fall short by a score of 4-3 to #12 UMass-Lowell in men’s Hockey East action at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Riverhawks swept the two game weekend series to remain on top of the Hockey East standings.
UMass-Lowell scored three goals in the first period as they did Friday night, again racing out to a 3-0 lead. Andre Lee got the first one at 10:45 on the powerplay, followed by another powerplay marker by Connor Sodergren at 14:30. Zach Kaiser got the final one of the opening 20 minutes at 18:49. David Breazeale got Maine (3-14-4, 1-10-2 Hockey East) on the board with his second of the season at the 14:11 mark of the second. Donovan Villeneuve-Houle would pull the Black Bears within 3-2 on an assist from Ben Poisson 3:24 into the third period. Jordan Schulting scored the eventual game winner for the Riverhawks at 10:56. Jacob Schmidt-Svestrup scored his second in as many nights at 17:10 with an extra attacker powerplay goal, but the guests were unable to find the equalizer despite pulling goalie Victor Ostman again late for the extra attacker.
Ostman finished with 29 saves in the loss. Schmidt-Svestrup had a goal and an assist and finished with four points on the weekend. Grant Hebert also added two assists. Lee had a goal and an assist for UMass-Lowell, and Owen Savory had 31 saves. The Riverhawks are now 13-3-3, 10-2-1 in Hockey East. Maine is now off until Friday 1/28 when they host Boston College for a single game at 7:30 p.m.
