Celine Tedenby and Ali Beltz scored game winning goals on Friday and Saturday respectively, as the University of Maine swept past Merrimack College in a two game women’s Hockey East series at Alfond Arena in Orono.
In game one on Friday afternoon, Maine battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the third period to pick up a 4-2 win. Jennifer Costa scored the tying goal at 1:38 of that third period, and Tedenby scored the winner unassisted just 1:24 later. Tedenby also added a second period goal, and Courtney Colarullo had the other Black Bears tally. Emily Oosterveld and Ally Qualley had the goals for Merrimack College. Loryn Porter made 24 saves for the win in net, while Emma Gorski stopped 20 in the loss for the Warriors.
On Saturday, Beltz netted a second period goal that turned out to be the game winner as Maine swept the series with a 3-1 victory. Alyssa Wruble and Costa also scored for the Bears, while MC got their lone marker from Madison Oelkers in the third. Porter was big again in between the pipes with 29 saves, while Gorski stopped 14 in defeat for the Warriors. Merrimack falls to 5-18-1, 4-14-1 in Hockey East.
Maine is now 10-13-1, 8-8-1 in conference play with four straight wins. The Black Bears are tied for fourth place in Hockey East, just five points behind third place UConn. Maine travels to Providence for a two game series against the Friars on Friday and Saturday evening.
