Maine sweeps Providence to extend win streak

The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team looked to build off some better play of late and add to their four game winning streak with a two game Hockey East series at Schneider Arena against Providence College this weekend.

On Friday, Mira Seregely scored a game winning third period powerplay goal at 4:04 to help Maine to a 2-1 win.

Delaney Couture gave Providence the 1-0 lead when she opened the scoring at 2:51 of the second period. The Black Bears evened it on the powerplay almost nine minutes later on a tally from Ally Johnson. The game winner from Seregely came off an assist from Ida Kuoppala. Courtney Colarullo and Jennifer Costa added an assist each in the victory, and Loryn Porter made 41 saves in net. Mareille Kingsley made 20 saves in the loss for the Friars.

On Sunday, Kuoppala had two powerplay goals as Maine finished off the two game sweep with a 4-1 victory.

Kuoppala scored her first of the day at 19:54 of the first period on the powerplay, then added the game winner also with the extra man at 6:30 of the second. Johnson scored her second of the weekend unassisted at 7:58 of the third, and after Providence scored late, Seregely also got her second of the series with an empty netter with three seconds remaining. Seregely had a goal and two assists, Kuoppala had her two goals, and Taylor Leetch had two assists in the win. Jorden Mattison had 31 saves. Caroline Peterson had the lone goal for the Friars, as they fall to 8-12-5 and 5-11-2 in Hockey East. Sandra Abstreiter made 29 saves in the defeat.

Maine (12-13-1, 10-8-1 HE) has now won six in a row and will host second place Vermont next Friday and Saturday. The Friday faceoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., while the Saturday game is slated for 2. The Black Bears are in fourth place in the conference standings, five points behind third place UConn.
