The Husson men’s and women’s basketball teams looked to extend their winning streaks and sweep their two game North Atlantic Conference weekend in Vermont against Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon.
In the men’s game, the home NVU-Lyndon Hornets hit 18 three-pointers and put an end to the Husson Eagles six game win streak with a 111-80 victory.
After a 26 point win by the Eagles Friday night, the hot shooting Hornets broke open a close game early in the first half by hitting 53% from the floor and nine three-pointers over the first 20 minutes to surge to a 51-37 halftime lead. NVU-Lyndon (6-13, 3-6 NAC) continued that in the second with nine more makes from behind the arc, outscoring Husson 60-43 in the final 20 minutes to pick up the 31 point win. The hosts overall shot 53.5% from the field in the game, 54.5% from downtown (18-33). Justin Thompson and Brett Cunningham led Husson (11-8, 8-2) in the defeat with 11 points, while Jared Balser chipped in 10 points. The Hornets put five players in double figures led by Antonio Carlisle who had a game high 36 points. Carlisle was 11-18 from the floor (6-8 three-pointers) and hit 8-8 from the foul line.
In the women’s game, Husson center Bailey Donovan followed up a 30 point and 10 rebound game in a 29 point Husson win Friday night with 19 points and 12 rebounds in a 73-49 victory over NVU-Lyndon to sweep the weekend.
Husson (14-4, 10-0 NAC) came out firing opening up as much as a 19 point first half lead and would lead 42-24 at the halftime break. The Hornets cut it to 12 about four minutes into third quarter, but the Eagles were too much using a 12-2 run to push the advantage to 22 and rolling to their 10th consecutive victory. Also scoring in double figures in the Husson win was Vanessa Duarte with 10 points. Roxanne Sasse added nine points off the bench, and Megan Peach had a very productive game with seven points and 12 rebounds. Faith Poirier led NVU-Lyndon in the loss with 14 points, as the Hornets drop to 7-9 and 2-7 in conference play.
Next up for Husson, the men’s team plays a conference game at UMaine-Presque Isle on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. while the women are at home in non-conference action at 5:30 against Bowdoin.
