According to a report from Fluto Shinzawa from the Athletic on Tuesday, the return and comeback of Boston Bruins goaltender Tuuka Rask isn’t expected to continue as the 34 year old native of Finland may be finalizing his retirement plans in the coming days.
Rask has appeared in four games since Boston officially re-signed him to a one year contract in January following offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum. He hasn’t appeared in a game since January 24th when he gave up five goals on 27 shots in a loss to the Anaheim Ducks. In the four starts, Rask has gone 2-2 with a 4.28 goals against average and only an .844 save percentage. Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said earlier Tuesday that Rask isn’t expected to return to practice this week.
If this is the end for Rask, he will retire as the winningest goalie in Boston Bruins history at 308-165-66 with a 2.28 GAA and .921 save percentage. He won the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goaltender in 2013-14 and twice guided Boston to the Stanley Cup Finals, in which they came up short to Chicago in 2013 and St. Louis in 2019. Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman would likely stay the top two goaltenders with the loss of Rask.
