The University of Maine women’s basketball team looks to continue their winning ways of late with a key America East Conference game Wednesday night at the Memorial Gym (The Pit) in Orono against Albany.
Maine (11-10, 8-3 America East) has turned up the defense during their five game win streak, in which has gotten them over the .500 mark overall for the first time this season. The Black Bears have only allowed 41.8 points per game during the streak, that included wins of 54-45 and a comeback 48-46 victory in road games in Vestal, New York over Binghamton this past weekend. Fifth year senior forward Maeve Carroll recorded back to back double double performances in the wins over the Bearcats, and junior guard Anne Simon has now reached double figures in 13 straight games.
Albany (16-6, 9-2 America East) comes to Orono also on a five game win streak. The Great Danes have a one game lead over Maine in the standings for second place in the conference, but with the top team in Stony Brook ineligible to compete in the America East playoffs, Albany and the Black Bears are actually battling for first place. The Great Danes are 11-0 at home this season, but only 5-6 on the road. Kayla Cooper and Helene Haegerstrand have been the leaders for UAlbany averaging 12.2 and 11.3 points per game respectively. Tipoff in Orono is scheduled for 7 p.m.
