BANGOR- Machias raced out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter and held off a tough East Grand team in a 47-36 victory in a Class D girls basketball quarterfinal game played Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Center,
Kristin Grant (6) and Skyler Tinker (5) combined for 11 points in the first quarter for the Bulldogs. Summer Sizemore (5) and Tinker (4) then combined for nine points in the second quarter, as the lead never got below 10 in the quarter and Machias held a 24-12 halftime advantage.
The Vikings cut the deficit to 26-20 early in the third quarter, as Isabella Cowger sparked the rally with six points. Machias scored the next four points to get the lead back to 10. Emma Davis put in four straight points to get the Vikings back within six. Jaida Case and Jaydin Anderson each got a basket to get the Bulldogs back up to a 34-24 lead after three quarters.
Jaydin Anderson dominated the fourth quarter as the lead never got below eight. Anderson had eight points and five rebounds in the quarter. Anderson finished with 18 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. Tinker recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals. Grant also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs with 11 points and three steals. Machias (14-4) will play in a semifinal game against Wisdom on Thursday afternoon.
Isabella Cowger led the Vikings with 12 points and 12 rebounds. East Grand finishes the season with a record of 11-8.
Machias out rebounded East Grand 30-26. The Bulldogs shot 5-10 from the free throw line, while the Vikings shot 2-4.
