BANGOR— Gabriel Gifford scored 13 points in fourth quarter/overtime to lift Old Town to a 59-57 overtime win over Mount View in a Class B quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.
Emmitt Byther contributed 13 rebounds and two blocks, his biggest play came when he put in the game winning shot with three seconds left in overtime. The freshman also had nine points.
The Coyotes held a 13-11 lead after the first quarter. Brayden Brown (6) and Carson Ellis (4) combined for 10 points in the quarter. Mount View went on a 12-0 run in the second quarter to take a 23-17 lead. The Mustangs had a 27-21 halftime advantage as Declan Knowlton had 13 first half points.
Mount View built the lead to 10 with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter and held a 47-40 lead with 2:50 remaining. That is when Gifford took over, scoring eight points in the next 45 seconds to give the Coyotes a 48-47 lead. Noah Hurd made a three pointer to give the Mustangs a 50-48 advantage with 2:05 remaining.
Ellis evened the score with 1:40 left. The teams had missed opportunities in the last 100 seconds of regulation as they went to overtime 50-50. In overtime the teams had four lead changes, capped by the Byther game winner with three seconds left. Mount View had one last opportunity that fell just short.
Gifford had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Coyotes. Brown had 15 points and five rebounds. Old Town (14-6) will play undefeated #1 seed Ellsworth in a semifinal game on Wednesday night.
Declan Knowlton led the Mustangs with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks. Draedyn Furrow had 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Noah Hurd recorded 13 points, six steals, and two assists. Wyatt Everson had six points, 11 steals, and six rebounds. Mount View finished the season with a record of 14-6.
