BANGOR- The Hermon Hawks became the first team in Bangor to advance to Championship Saturday. Charlotte Caron scored 13 points off the bench, and Elizabeth Wyman added 11 as Hermon defeated the MDI Trojans 42-32 in a Class B girls semifinal game at the Cross Insurance Center on Wednesday afternoon.
A slow start for both teams saw MDI scoring the final four points of the first quarter to take a 6-3 advantage. Hermon senior center Megan Tracy and senior forward Sydney Gallop got into early foul trouble with two a piece in the opening frame. A basket by Grace Witham, 1-2 from the line by Elena Alderman, and a bucket in the paint by Elizabeth Jones stretched the Trojans run to 9-0 early in the second for a 11-3 lead. The Hawks came alive however, ending the first half on a 14-0 run sparked by two 3-pointers each by both Faith Coombs and Caron to take the 17-11 lead into the locker room.
Hermon (18-2) opened it up in the third quarter outscoring MDI 14-6 leading by as many as 15, and 31-17 headed to the fourth. The Hawks scored the first basket of the final period for the largest lead of the day at 16, before the Trojans rallied back within five on a bucket by Olivia Gray at 35-30 with 3:25 left. Hermon capped off the win by scoring seven of the final nine points, all from the foul line. The Hawks will try to repeat as regional champs when they face top seed Old Town on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Caron added four rebounds and Wyman added six to their point totals. Coombs chipped in six points and Maddie Lebel added 5 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks shot 10-16 from the line, and outrebounded MDI 22-16. Elizabeth Jones had 12 points to lead the Trojans. Olivia Gray finished with seven points and six rebounds. MDI finishes their season at 16-5.
