After failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the United States men’s national soccer team has made it in to the 2022 event to be held in Qatar.
The team lost their last qualifying game on Wednesday night 2-0 to Costa Rica, but won the first tiebreaker (goal differential) over Costa Rica to advance. The United States, who went 7-3-4 in qualifiers, joins Canada and Mexico who both went 8-2-4 out of the Concacaf region to advance to the Cup that starts in November. Costa Rica will now have to face New Zealand in June for a chance to play in the Cup in Qatar. The only way the US wouldn’t of advanced is if Costa Rica would of won the game by six goals or more on Wednesday.
The event that begins on November 21 and runs to December 18 is the first ever World Cup to be held in an Arab Nation, and also the first time it has not been held in the months of May, June, or July. The 32 team field will be broken into eight four team draws. Only three teams are remaining to qualify with the winners of the Costa Rica/New Zealand game, Peru against either Australia or United Arab Emirates, and Wales against Scotland/Ukraine. The Wales vs Scotland/Ukraine match was originally scheduled for March 24, but was postponed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and hasn’t yet been re-scheduled. 29 of the 32 teams and what draw and pot they are in will be announced in Qatar on Friday.
