The Maine Central Institute tennis programs are led by the brother/sister combo or John and Jocelyn Buys. The girls’ record last year was 5-6. The girls beat Presque Isle before losing to MDI in the regional quarterfinals. The boys’ record was 5-7, losing in the prelim round to Old Town. Jocelyn coaches the girls squad while John leads the boys team.
The Huskies have high expectations heading into the 2022 season. The hope is that the young players can build off their opportunity they had from valuable court time in 2021. The Huskies had an amazing turn out for tryouts as the program continues to grow.
“My sister and I have high expectations for both teams. We had 60 kids try out. Those are huge numbers for our program which has grown considerably over the past few years. With a lot of returning student athletes and some new talent, we are excited to see what the 2022 season holds for MCI tennis,”John Buys said. “ Last year, we battled a lot of quarantines due to contact tracing that kept a lot of kids out of play, but it helped give some of our younger players a chance to play up the ladder which we hope to build on this year. Our residential population brings some special talent into our program, but we are also seeing increased local interest which has been helpful. Lidia Gomez is a senior this year, and while she is recovering from an arm injury, I am excited to see what she can do.”
The Huskies are scheduled to open the season at home against Waterville on April 14th.
