McKenna Smith threw a game one no-hitter, and the Husson softball team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit in game two on Friday afternoon to sweep a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader over UMaine-Farmington by scores of 9-0 and 6-2 at Prescott Field in Farmington.
It was all about Smith in the first game, as she only allowed two baserunners in the second and fourth inning on Husson errors. Smith (11-2) struck out 18, striking out the side in four different frames. A first inning RBI double by Meagan Gosselin is all the Eagles needed. Katie Windsor had three hits and three RBI, while Madelyn Fowler also drove in a pair. UMaine-Farmington broke on top 2-0 in the first inning in game two on a throwing error and an RBI groundout by Christa Allen. That is all the scoring the Beavers would be able to muster on the day. Husson tied it on RBI doubles by Brianne McCabe and MacKenzie Wendelken in the third inning, and took the lead for good 3-2 on a sacrifice RBI fly by Kiara McLeod in the fourth. The guests tacked on with an RBI groundout from Olivia McCarty, and a two-run double by Kenzie Dore in the fifth to end the scoring and keep them unbeaten in conference play. Jen Jones (4-0) got the win in the circle in game two allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Dore had two hits to lead the offense. Leah Stevens, Makayla Wilson, and MacKenzie Dyer had the hits for UMF who falls to 1-17 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. The Smith no-hitter was the 19th in the history of Husson softball. She has only allowed 10 earned runs in 87 innings pitched this season with 156 strikeouts and an earned run average of 0.80.
Husson is now 18-6, 6-0 in the NAC and will host a conference doubleheader against UMaine-Presque Isle on Tuesday at O’Keefe Field in Bangor beginning at 3 p.m.
