JD Martinez had a go ahead RBI single in the sixth inning on Wednesday night, and Michael Wacha pitched 6.0 solid innings to pick up the win on the mound as the Boston Red Sox ended a four game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Boston (8-11) took the early lead when Xander Bogaerts singled with two outs, and Rafael Devers doubled him in in the top of the first inning. Toronto tied it when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached on a fielders choice to score Tyler Heineman in the third. Martinez had the game winner in the sixth, followed by a Kike Hernandez RBI sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 Sox. They added some breathing room in the eighth on back to back doubles by Martinez and Hernandez, and a sacrifice RBI fly from Bobby Dalbec for a 5-1 lead. Bogaerts added his fourth hit of the night with an RBI single in the ninth, and Rob Refsnyder contributed a pinch hit RBI double.
Wacha (2-0) gave up just one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Along with the four hits from Bogaerts, Devers and Martinez each added two a piece. George Springer had two hits for Toronto, who falls to 12-7 on the season. Trent Thornton (0-1) took the loss in relief of Ross Stripling. The Red Sox, who have lost four of six games to the Blue Jays so far this season, will try to pick up a split in the finale of the four game series on Thursday afternoon at 3:07. RHP Garrett Whitlock (1-0, 0.66 ERA) will get the start for Boston, to be opposed by RHP Alek Manoah (3-0, 2.00) for Toronto.
