Rafael Devers hit a grandslam on Tuesday night as part of a six run second inning, as the Boston Red Sox ended a five game losing streak with a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Christian Vazquez had an RBI single and Jackie Bradley Jr. walked with the bases loaded in that second inning, and Devers with the bases still loaded would take Atlanta starter Kyle Wright deep over the fence in centerfield for a 6-0 lead. Atlanta (14-17) got three runs back in the third on a Marcell Ozuna RBI sacrifice fly and a two-run homerun by Travis d’Arnaud, and cut it to 6-4 on an RBI fielders choice by Ozuna in the seventh inning. Boston (11-19) put it away in the ninth on bases loaded walk by Alex Verdugo and a two-run single by Trevor Story.
Xander Bogaerts had three hits to lead the way, while Devers and Story had two a piece. Devers drove in the four runs with his fifth homerun of the season. Tyler Danish (1-0) would pick up the win in relief. Garrett Whitlock started the game and allowed three runs over 3.0 innings. John Schreiber picked up his first save and worked 2.0 innings. Boston will finish their two game interleague series with Atlanta Wednesday night at 7:20, before heading to Texas for a weekend series with the Rangers. Nathan Eovaldi (1-1, 2.94 ERA) will be on the hill for the Sox, while the Braves counter with Ian Anderson (3-1, 4.01).
