Bobby Dalbec delivered the only offense needed for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night with an RBI double in the sixth inning in a 1-0 victory over the floundering Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Boston has now won seven games in a row, and sent Los Angeles to their 14th straight defeat.
Nathan Eovaldi (4-2) earned the win on the mound going 5.0 innings allowing six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. The combination of Tyler Danish, Jake Diekman, John Schreiber, and Matt Strahm out of the bullpen kept Los Angeles off the board the final 4.0 innings allowing just one hit with no walks. Strahm picked up his third save of the season. The game winner by Dalbec came after there were two outs in the sixth, driving in Alex Verdugo who had drawn a walk. Juan Lagares had two hits for the Angels, and Jimmy Herget (1-1) took the pitching loss in relief of starter Reid Detmers who didn’t allow a run on three hits in 4.1 innings. Los Angeles is now 27-31, and is being led by interim manager Phil Nevin after firing Joe Maddon on Tuesday.
Boston (30-27) will go for the four game sweep Thursday night. The Red Sox are currently 6-0 on their 10 game West Coast road trip. Right hander Nick Pivetta (5-4, 3.50 ERA) will get the ball in the series finale at 9:38 p.m., to be opposed by Los Angeles righty Shohei Ohtani (3-4, 3.99). Pivetta has won his last five starts consecutively. Boston will finish the road trip when they head to Seattle for three games with the Mariners this weekend.
